About Wattle & Well
Health reading for Australians in midlife and beyond, written in plain English and linked to its sources.
Somewhere around the mid-forties, health stops being something that happens to other people. A blood test comes back with an asterisk. A knee starts complaining on the stairs. The GP mentions a number you have never heard of. Most of us go looking for answers online and find either a wall of medical jargon or confident advice with no source behind it.
Wattle & Well sits between the two. We take the health topics that affect the largest number of Australians from their mid-forties onward and explain them in everyday language.
What we cover
We chose our topics from national data. The Australian Bureau of Statistics National Health Survey and related studies show which conditions are most common in the second half of life, and our five sections follow them:
How our articles are made
Each article starts from published Australian sources: the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Healthdirect, the Department of Health, and national bodies such as the Heart Foundation, the Liver Foundation, Diabetes Australia and Arthritis Australia. Where an Australian source does not exist we use peer-reviewed research. Every article ends with a list of the sources it relies on, with links, so you can check anything for yourself.
We are a publisher, not a clinic. Nobody at Wattle & Well can assess your health, and nothing here replaces a conversation with your own GP. Our editorial policy explains how we research, write and correct our articles.
How we are funded
Wattle & Well is funded by advertising. Advertising features are written separately from our articles and are identified as advertising on the page.
The name
Golden wattle is Australia's national floral emblem. It flowers at the end of winter, grows in poor soil and comes back after fire. It seemed a fair symbol for the second half of life.
